My Ego Cost Me Some Great Opportunities
This is a story I share with people I coach, but I think it is something that needs to be heard in this industry.
Before I was in high-ticket sales, I came from corporate sales.
I had closed single deals larger than the biggest months that I have had in this space.
I was desensitised to money.
Truth be told, I thought I’d have almost a free ride in this space.
I saw everyone just starting out, with no experience, and I thought I’d walk into any offer.
I was wrong.
This industry chewed me up and almost spat me out.
I came so close to going back to the corporate life.
I had great offers and I was failing miserably at trying to figure this all out.
My ego was a huge contributor to this.
I remember one particular call, I was speaking to an offer owner and they mentioned the best in their team had a 35% close rate.
I dismissed it, politely of course, but I thought a 35% close rate was beneath me.
Two months later, there were people on that team doing 30k per month. I could have been one of them.
I’ve also had offers where it was a set/close combo.
Me? A closer? Go back to setting?
No way!
Idiot.
The idea of going back to setting was again, beneath me.
I’m a closer, I’m not going back to setting.
I saw people on that offer doing 35k a month within 6 months, and here I was still playing around with low-end offers where I was only closing.
I learned a lot by taking the path I did, and ultimately I ended up in a very nice position, but I made it a lot harder on myself.
What should you take from this?
I know most people will read this and say “that’s not me, my ego is in check”, that’s okay.
But even the most humble people I have spoken to about this have come back to me within a few days and tell me they had to do some deep work to see that what I was saying was true.
If the money is there, don’t ignore it.
If you see genuine potential in an offer, don’t write it off.
If you have to set? Who cares.
If the close rate is lower than you want, but the earning potential is great and the owners are receptive to feedback, go for it.
And for the record, I currently set/close on one of my offers and I love it.
I realized that most of the time, I didn't hate the task, I just didn't know how to do it properly.
